After spending more than 30 years sewing custom skirts, one of the biggest lessons I have learned is that comfort matters just as much as style. Many women want to look elegant and professional, but they also want to feel comfortable throughout the day whether they are at work, church, traveling, or simply going about their daily routine.
Over the years, many of my customers have shared similar frustrations about store-bought skirts. Some skirts may look beautiful on display but feel uncomfortable after only a few hours of wear. Others may fit in one area but not another. This is especially common with pencil skirts and fitted office wear.
That is one reason I enjoy making custom skirts by hand. I can focus on creating pieces that fit properly while still allowing movement and comfort. Small details like proper lining, darts, pleats, waist shaping, and fabric selection can make a big difference in how a skirt feels when worn.
I have also learned that every woman’s body shape is different. Some women prefer longer lengths for modesty while others prefer a more modern cut. Some want structured wool blend office skirts while others prefer lightweight linen skirts for warmer weather. There is no single design that works for everyone, which is why custom handmade fashion continues to be important.
Fabric choice also plays a major role in comfort. Over the years I have worked with wool blends, linen blends, ponte knits, and stretch fabrics, and each one gives a different feel and appearance. Some fabrics hold structure beautifully for professional office wear while others provide softness and movement for casual fashion.
One of the most rewarding parts of sewing custom skirts is knowing that the finished piece was made specifically for one person. In today’s fast fashion world, handmade clothing still offers something personal that cannot easily be replaced.
For me, sewing has never only been about fashion. It has always been about helping women feel comfortable, confident, and elegant in clothing designed especially for them.
